The commitment to the future of nearly 7,000 students is evident in all classrooms in McCracken County Public Schools. The district offers six elementary schools: Concord, Farley, Heath, Hendron/Lone Oak, Lone Oak and Reidland; as well as middle schools at Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland, and high schools at Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland. Students from the three high schools will come together in the fall of 2013 to form the new McCracken County High School.
A regional leader in educational innovations, McCracken County Public Schools provides students with learning opportunities that reach beyond the classroom.
McCracken County high school student and teachers are in the third year of an Apple 1:1 computing initiative. All high school students and all teachers in McCracken County Public Schools are provided Apple MacBook laptop computers. 95 percent of computers in the district are less than five years old. Instructional technology is integrated into all classrooms in McCracken County, providing students with opportunities to learn and connect beyond classroom walls.
McCracken County offers Project Lead the Way programs in pre-engineering and biomedical sciences in the district's high schools and middle schools. Project Lead the Way provides rigorous, relevant education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. McCracken County students are also offered robotics instruction in elementary, middle and high schools.
The district’s Advanced Placement program shows an enrollment of over 600 students in 17 different AP courses. All McCracken County high schools continue to participate in the AdvanceKentucky program, a partner program with The National Math and Science Initiative dedicated to accelerating advanced placement success. AdvanceKentucky program schools performed at seven times the national rate on the 2010 advanced placement math, science and English exams.
McCracken County’s partnership with West Kentucky Community and Technical College provides Commonwealth Middle College students the opportunity to accelerate their education by earning up to nine college credit hours per semester as they also complete requirements for high school graduation.
McCracken County Public Schools ranks 21st among Kentucky’s 174 school districts with a composite ACT score of 20 for high school juniors. The ACT, given to all Kentucky juniors, measures college readiness in four content areas - English, mathematics, reading and science. McCracken County students rank above the state average of 18.5. For the second consecutive year, all three McCracken County High Schools experienced an increase in the overall composite score.
The district's attendance rate last year at 95 percent was above the state average of 94, with September 2011 attendance at 96.6 percent. Enrollment in McCracken County Public Schools for September 2011: Grades K-5 - 3,363; Grades 6-8 - 1,661; Grades 9-12 -1,934; total – 6,958. The district's graduation rate of 90 percent is also well above the state's average rate of 84.
McCracken County students continue a longstanding tradition of winning numerous academic, art, music and athletic competitions at the regional, state and national levels. The district recognizes and supports opportunities for each student to participate and excel in diversified and high quality extracurricular programs in academics, athletics and the arts.
The preparation and experience of the faculty and staff in McCracken County Public Schools are important to our success. The district employs 884 classified and certified staff, with a student/teacher ratio of 17:1. The district’s competitive teacher salary ranges from $36,869-$66,926. All core academic subjects are taught by Highly Qualified teachers. Of all teachers in McCracken County Public Schools, 50 percent have obtained masters degrees and 29 percent hold Rank I certification. Additionally, 28 teachers in McCracken County Public Schools have obtained certification through the National Board for Professional Standards.
The construction of McCracken County High School, success in a variety of academic programs and ongoing instructional technology initiatives continue to provide an exciting future for the students of McCracken County Public Schools.
The consolidation of the district's three high schools will bring about some exciting changes in the fall of 2013. McCracken County Public Schools offers six elementary schools in three attendance zones: Concord, Farley, Heath, Hendron/Lone Oak, Lone Oak and Reidland; as well as middle schools at Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland, and high schools at Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland. Students from the three high schools will come together in the fall of 2013 to form the new McCracken County High School. Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland middle schools will move to the former high school facilities and continue as 6-8 grade middle schools. The six elementary schools (Heath - Concord & Heath elementary schools, Lone Oak - Lone Oak & Hendron-Lone Oak elementary schools, and Reidland - Farley & Reidland elementary schools) will become kindergarten-3 grade schools in their current buildings. Students from each attendance zone (Concord and Heath, Lone Oak and Hendron Lone Oak, Farley and Reidland) will come together for 4-5 grade intermediate schools in the former middle school facilities of Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland.
