MCPS launches Virtual Math Academy
- 1-14-2012
McCracken County Public Schools has launched a multimedia web page aimed at helping elementary students and families practice math concepts on their own. The McCracken County Virtual Math Academy page provides video tutorials for a variety of elementary mathematics concepts including: place value, mental math, word problems, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
The instructional videos are based upon the Singapore approach to mathematics instruction, an instructional approach implemented by many elementary schools within the district.
"Our goals with this project were two-fold," says Director of Elementary Instruction Tina Hayes. "We wanted parents and families to understand how these math concepts were being taught in the classroom, so they could more effectively help their children with these concepts at home. It was also important to have the students directly contribute to these video tutorials. Today's learners understand the importance of using technology to contribute to the learning of others - this project allowed the students to do that."
There are currently 21 video tutorials available online for grades 1-5, with plans to add additional lessons before the end of the year. Students and families may access the site here.
